PROJECT: EDUCATION & AWARENESS
We acknowledge the planning history of the islands and provide links to existing literature about the HAI to inform the public and decision makers. A digital library is growing at the Houtman Abrolhos Conservation Network Facebook site.
Ultimately, we advocate for a
"Go to site" for all proposed developments at the Abrolhos Islands, and a
"Go to site" tracking island and reef health
We want to comment on and understand cumulative impacts and their potential effects on the ecosystem.
We want to keep our eyes open - the islands are too special to wreck.
The Abrolhos Islands Management Advisory Committee (AIMAC) used to provide advice to the Minister of Fisheries on the management of the islands. This committee has developed a lot of literature and has a rich planning history. We seek advice from former members of AIMAC and Friends of the Abrolhos Islands to maintain continuity of knowledge.
HACN intends to increase education & awareness through a series of community forums and workshops based on input from experts in the field. The Nature based Tourism Forum featured Associate Professor David Newsome from Murdoch University and Dr Nic Dunlop from the Conservation Council WA and Birdlife Australia, and was held on 5th of February 2019 and in collaboration with Pollinators Tourism Incubator in Geraldton . The Perth based event also featured Dr Chris Surman from Halfmoon Biosciences, who has studied seabirds at the islands for over 30 years. In 2019, he published his book: "Houtman Abrolhos A natural history".
